Golf Range Finder 101
Any serious golf player knows that the right golf range finder is a must have. Thanks to modern technology using the wrong club to take that shot out of the woods into an unseen hole is no longer necessary! Using a golf range finder puts an end to the guesstimate that golf once was.
A range finder will lock in on the hole and tell you how far you have to hit that hole which in turn helps you to choose the right club! You can cut down on your strokes dramatically and improve your handicap!
How They Work
There are plenty of range finders on the market to choose from. They all work under the same principles. A laser light is used to find the target and measure the distance. The hand held device is pointed in the presumed direction of the target and once it hits the target the laser beam will bounce back to the device and using that laser beam distance is measured.
When using a golf range finder the target is typically the flagstaff on the green marking the hole. The devices are typically very accurate. The user only needs to be able to keep the device steady for approximately 5 seconds to get an accurate reading.
There are plenty of features to choose from these devices range from simple devices that calculate distance to devices that not only calculate distant but also calculate slope. Some have special “pinseeker” modes that will only recognize the flagstaff and ignore all other objects that it detects on the green, like people.
Some models come fully equipped with “storm” settings so that the laser quickly “cuts” through any rain or other weather conditions. You can also find models that have “brush” settings that allows the device to discount any brush that may be in the way.
Of course the more features the device has the more expensive it will be. Regardless how many features the device offers it is still the same easy to use instructions. You simply set the mode and point the device!
There are times when the golf range finder will not work as it should. Usually those times are due to weather conditions. In very rainy conditions, our overly sunny conditions you may have some problems hitting the target with the laser beam but usually these devices are very easy to use and very accurate.
It does take a steady hand to hold the device and hit the target, but if you can keep your hand steady for at least 5 seconds you should not experience any difficulty. There are some models that are less sensitive that will work better for folks that have trouble keeping a steady hand.
There are plenty of models to choose from that run the full range of affordability. The most basic models start at around two hundred fifty dollars up to around six hundred dollars. In each price range you will find models that have various modes.
